Khudavang monastery complex

The foundation of the Khudavang monastery, located in the village of Vang, Kalbajar region, was laid in the first centuries AD, when Christian missionaries were engaged in propaganda in Caucasian Albania. The earliest building of the complex, the basilica, was built in the 8th century on the tomb of Dadi, who came to preach Christianity at the behest of St. Faddei, an apostle of Jesus Christ.

In this monastery, which is the religious center of the Albanian Khachin Principality, the residence of the Albanian bishop and the center of religious education functioned. In the 13th century, the monastery was renovated and additional buildings were built by the family of Bahram, the son of Hasan the Great, Prince of Khachin of the Mehrani dynasty.

During the occupation, Armenians carried out illegal restoration work in Khudavang monastery, changes were made in many elements of the cross.

On December 4, 2020, the visit of representatives of the Albanian-Udi religious community of Azerbaijan, the successor of the Albanian (Caucasian) Apostolic Independent Church, to the Khudavang monastery complex was a significant event.

On January 8, 2021, representatives of the Albanian-Udi religious community of Azerbaijan celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ in the Khudavang monastery complex. Representatives of the community performed rituals in the church belonging to the temple complex, holiday prayers were recited, and candles were lit in the church.
