The selection of Azerbaijan's scientific and technological priorities, the determination of the leading directions of technological development, the scientific and technological potential and competitiveness of our country can be justified through patent statistics and the structure and directions of the patent portfolio. This type of research, which based on patents for inventions, begins first with the determination of the country's technological profile.
During 9 months of 2023, 69 invention patents, 26 utility model patents, and 7 industrial design patents were registered in the State Register of Industrial Property Objects by the Intellectual Property Agency.
Every year, the Agency regularly collects statistics related to intellectual property, analyzes and submits them to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). It is possible to follow these data and their dynamics over the years in the Azerbaijani section of the WIPO website.
In order to commercialize and implement the priority inventions in force, which were patented by the Intellectual Property Agency and the Eurasian Patent Organization (APT) an analyse conducted on the Ministry of Science and Education and the State Oil Company, one of the institutions with the majority number of patents.
As a result of research, 84 valid patents belonging to the Ministry of Science and Education and 29 valid patents belonging to the State Oil Company were selected. A detailed explanatory reference of those patents was sent by the Agency to the Ministry of Science and Education and the State Oil Company, and an offer was made to assist in their application and commercialization in the national economy.
Currently, 7 of the valid patents of the State Oil Company’s “Oil Gas Scientific Research Project” Institute in Azerbaijan and APT have been applied in production areas. In the future, several more patents are also planned to be applied.
The Agency conducted an analysis of patents for inventions in the country and the Eurasian Patent Organization in 2022 in accordance with the WIPO “International Patent Classification”. It was determined that 126 (47%) of the patents in force belong to the section “Chemistry and metallurgy”, 47 (18%) to the section “Provision of vital human needs”, 32 (12%) to the section “Construction and mining”, 18 (7%) to the section “Physics”.
It should be noted that in order to increase state support for this area, Decree “On Stimulating Inventive Activity” dated June 2022, 15, No. 1716 signed by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
